Why “What Kind” Matters More as Pets Age

‘Best protein for senior dogs.’ ‘Best protein for old cats.’ ‘High quality protein for dogs with kidney disease.’ These are among the most common searches pet parents make when their pet enters the senior years. Here is what the evidence says.

When a dog or cat enters the senior life stage, their body’s ability to extract nutrition from food begins to change. Digestive efficiency declines. Gastric acid secretion drops. The gut microbiome shifts. Muscle mass erodes: a Labrador can lose 15 to 25 per cent of their lean muscle between the ages of seven and twelve, even on an adequate diet, and a smaller breed like a Pug may show the effects sooner because there is less muscle to spare. For cats, roughly one in five over the age of twelve shows measurable declines in protein digestion, and one in three struggles with fat absorption.

This means the protein your senior pet eats needs to work harder. Four dimensions of protein quality become particularly important:

Biological value (BV) measures how much of the protein your pet’s body can actually use after digestion. Egg protein scores roughly 100 — almost every amino acid is retained. Soy scores around 74. The higher the BV, the less waste the kidneys must process. This is critical for pets with early kidney changes.

Digestibility determines how much protein is broken down and absorbed before it passes through. A protein that is 90 per cent digestible delivers far more usable nutrition than one that is 75 per cent digestible, even if the crude protein percentage on the label is identical.

Amino acid profile matters because proteins are not interchangeable. Your pet needs specific amino acids in specific ratios. Taurine is the classic example: cats cannot make enough of it themselves, and a taurine deficit can cause heart disease and blindness. Dogs can synthesise taurine, but some breeds are genetically predisposed to shortfalls.

Phosphorus load becomes the decisive factor for pets with kidney disease. Failing kidneys cannot clear excess phosphorus from the blood, so the protein your pet eats must deliver maximum nutrition with minimum phosphorus. This is where the choice of protein source makes a measurable difference in how a kidney patient feels day to day.

Traditional Animal Proteins Compared

Pet parents often describe this choice as: ‘Should I feed eggs or fish?’ ‘Is chicken good enough for an older dog?’ ‘What protein is easiest on my cat’s kidneys?’ Here is what the evidence says.

Eggs: The Protein Most Pet Parents Underestimate

Egg protein has the highest biological value of any single food, close to 100. That means almost every gram of protein your pet eats from an egg is retained and used by the body. For senior pets, this efficiency matters enormously: it delivers maximum amino acids with minimum metabolic waste.

For pets with kidney disease, the distinction between whole eggs and egg whites becomes critical. Egg whites deliver the same exceptional biological value with very little phosphorus. Egg yolks, while nutrient-rich, carry moderate phosphorus levels that can be problematic for pets on phosphorus-restricted diets. A practical approach, supported by veterinary nutritionists, is to feed one or two egg whites for every whole egg in a kidney patient’s diet. Adding finely ground eggshell (roughly half a teaspoon per pound of food) provides calcium that acts as a natural phosphorus binder.

One important caveat: eggs contain essentially no taurine. For dogs, this is rarely an issue — they synthesise taurine from other amino acids. For cats, taurine must come from other sources in the diet, making eggs an excellent complement to, but not a replacement for, taurine-rich proteins like fish and dark poultry meat.

Always cook eggs before feeding. Raw egg whites contain avidin, a protein that blocks biotin absorption.

Fish: Omega-3s and the Kidney Advantage

White fish (cod, pollock, and similar lean species) combines high biological value, low phosphorus, and a naturally lean profile. For senior cats with early chronic kidney disease, particularly breeds like the Persian who are genetically predisposed to kidney issues, white fish is one of the strongest protein choices available. It also delivers the omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) that support joint health, cognitive function, and the anti-inflammatory response that ageing bodies increasingly need.

Salmon and oily fish deliver even higher concentrations of EPA and DHA, though with more fat and moderately more phosphorus. For senior pets without kidney concerns, oily fish is an excellent addition — the omega-3 benefits are well-documented for both cognitive function and skin health. For kidney patients, white fish is the safer primary choice, with small amounts of oily fish for the omega-3 benefit.

Chicken, Lamb, Turkey, and Duck

Chicken remains the most commonly fed protein in commercial pet food globally. It offers good biological value, moderate phosphorus, and broad palatability. Chicken dark meat is notably richer in taurine than breast meat — an important consideration for cat owners. Lamb delivers similar nutritional quality with a higher fat content, which can be an advantage for underweight seniors who need calorie-dense meals. Turkey dark meat is the richest common source of taurine among poultry proteins. Duck occupies a useful position: it is structurally different enough from chicken that many chicken-allergic dogs tolerate it well, making it both a traditional and a novel protein depending on your pet’s dietary history. In markets where venison and rabbit are difficult to source, duck is often the most accessible novel protein option.

Novel Animal Proteins: When Your Pet Needs Something Different

What do you feed a dog who reacts to everything? Pet parents dealing with chronic itching, recurring ear infections, or stubborn digestive issues often arrive at two terms: ‘novel protein’ and ‘elimination diet.’ Here is what they mean.

A novel protein is simply one your pet has never eaten before. That distinction is individual, not universal — venison is novel for a dog who has eaten chicken all their life, but it is not novel for a dog who has been eating venison-based food for years. The principle matters more than the protein: food allergies develop through repeated exposure. By introducing an unfamiliar protein, you reduce the likelihood of triggering an immune response.

The primary use case for novel proteins in senior pets is elimination diets — the gold standard for diagnosing food allergies and inflammatory bowel disease. A single novel protein source is fed exclusively for six to ten weeks, during which time no other foods, treats, or supplements are given. If symptoms improve, the original diet likely contained an allergen.

Venison is the most widely used novel protein in commercial pet food. Duck is increasingly available and often the most accessible option. Rabbit offers an ultra-lean profile that suits overweight seniors or those with a history of pancreatitis. Kangaroo and quail remain specialist options with limited availability in many markets.

For senior pets, the relevance is clinical: inflammatory bowel disease prevalence increases with age, particularly in cats. Siamese and Abyssinian cats appear to carry a higher genetic risk. A novel protein diet, guided by your vet, can be the difference between a pet who eats comfortably and one who struggles with chronic gastrointestinal distress.

Insect Protein: A Newer Option Worth Understanding

A growing number of pet parents are discovering a category that did not exist in pet food a decade ago: insect protein. Searches for ‘insect protein dog food’ and ‘sustainable pet food’ are rising. Here is what the science says so far, and where the gaps remain.

Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) and cricket meal are the two insect species most commonly used in pet food. They deliver complete amino acid profiles for both dogs and cats, with crude protein levels comparable to conventional sources. But insect protein is not simply “another chicken.” It delivers a genuinely different nutritional package — one with potential benefits and real limitations that deserve honest assessment.

What Insect Protein Delivers Beyond Protein

Prebiotic fibre from chitin. The insect exoskeleton contains chitin, a form of insoluble fibre that dogs barely digest — and that is partly the point. Studies show that undigested insect residues are fermented by gut bacteria to produce beneficial short-chain fatty acids, and dogs fed BSFL-based diets showed shifts toward more beneficial gut bacteria profiles. For senior pets whose gut health is changing, this prebiotic effect is a genuine advantage. However, chitin also reduces overall protein digestibility, which is why insect meal works best as part of a formulation, not as a sole protein source.

Antimicrobial compounds. BSFL fat is naturally rich in lauric acid, a medium-chain fatty acid with well-documented antimicrobial properties in laboratory studies. It is active against a range of bacteria including Staphylococcus, Clostridium, and Salmonella. BSFL also contains naturally occurring antimicrobial peptides (defensins, cecropins, and others) that provide a second, independent antimicrobial pathway.

The most plausible benefit for your pet is at the gut level: lauric acid appears to be selectively active against harmful bacteria while sparing beneficial ones. The honest caveat: most antimicrobial evidence is from laboratory studies, and no clinical trials in dogs or cats have confirmed these effects through dietary consumption.

A favourable calcium-to-phosphorus ratio. BSFL naturally delivers a roughly 2:1 calcium-to-phosphorus ratio, unusual among protein sources and potentially beneficial for senior formulations. However, the absolute phosphorus content still requires monitoring for pets with kidney disease.

What Insect Protein Does Not Yet Deliver

The amino acid profile, while complete, is limited in methionine and cysteine (the sulphur amino acids). This means insect protein at minimum inclusion levels is insufficient as a sole protein source and must be combined with complementary proteins or supplemented.

BSFL contains very little taurine, roughly one-tenth of the minimum required in cat food. Supplemental taurine is mandatory in any insect-based cat food. Cricket meal is somewhat better but still falls short of feline requirements.

BSFL fat contains negligible EPA and DHA, the omega-3 fatty acids critical for joint health, cognitive function, and anti-inflammatory support in senior pets. Any insect-based senior diet must include a marine omega-3 supplement (fish oil or algae oil).

No feeding trials have specifically enrolled senior or geriatric dogs or cats. All published digestibility and safety data comes from young-to-middle-aged adult animals. This is the single largest evidence gap, and it means all claims about senior benefits are extrapolated rather than directly demonstrated.

The Allergy Question: It Is Not the Chitin

Insect protein is often marketed as hypoallergenic because most pets have never eaten it. This is accurate in the “novel protein” sense: your pet’s immune system has no memory of these proteins. However, there is a specific cross-reactivity risk that deserves attention.

The allergen is not chitin itself — chitin is a polysaccharide that does not trigger antibody-mediated allergic responses. The risk comes from conserved proteins, particularly tropomyosin, that insects share with dust mites, crustaceans, and molluscs. These proteins share more than 65 per cent of their amino acid sequence across species. In one study, roughly 57 per cent of dogs with documented dust mite allergies showed immune reactivity to mealworm proteins.

Dust mite allergy is common in dogs — it is the most frequently identified environmental allergen, affecting 30 to 80 per cent of atopic dogs depending on the study. If your senior pet has a known history of atopic dermatitis or dust mite sensitivity, discuss insect protein with your vet before introducing it.

Insect Protein and the Vegetarian Household

For households that follow a vegetarian tradition, and there are many across cultures and continents, the challenge of feeding a pet is real. Whether you have a Labrador, an Indie, or a Pug, dogs are omnivores and can thrive on a carefully formulated diet that includes eggs and dairy. But many families find the handling, storage, and presence of raw or cooked meat in the kitchen uncomfortable, regardless of who is eating it.

Insect protein occupies a different space from conventional meat in how many people experience it. There is no blood, no bones, no slaughter in the way most people understand the word. The protein arrives as a processed meal or kibble, indistinguishable in form from any other dry food. Some vegetarian households find this a more comfortable way to provide the complete amino acid profile their dog needs without the cultural and practical friction of handling meat.

This is not a universal position — some ethical and religious traditions extend the same moral consideration to insects as to any other living creature, and for those households, insect protein is no more acceptable than chicken. The choice is personal, and it deserves the same respect that any dietary decision receives. What the science offers is a factual observation: insect protein provides a nutritionally complete, animal-source amino acid profile that some households may find more compatible with their values than conventional meat.

For cats, the same biological reality applies regardless of the household’s dietary tradition: cats are obligate carnivores, and insect protein — while technically animal-derived — still requires taurine supplementation and omega-3 supplementation to meet feline needs. Insect protein may ease the ethical tension, but it does not eliminate the nutritional complexity of feeding a carnivore.

Plant-Based Proteins for Dogs

‘Can dogs be vegetarian?’ It is one of the most searched pet nutrition questions worldwide, and one of the most polarising. Here is what the evidence supports, and where caution is warranted.

Dogs are omnivores. Unlike cats, they can synthesise taurine from dietary precursors and can digest plant-based nutrients effectively. A carefully formulated vegetarian diet — designed by a board-certified veterinary nutritionist, not assembled from online recipes — can meet canine amino acid requirements when plant proteins are properly combined and supplemented.

The practical reality for senior dogs is that plant proteins (soy, pea protein, lentils, chickpeas) generally have lower biological value and lower digestibility than animal proteins. For an ageing dog already losing muscle mass and digestive efficiency, plant proteins work best as a supplement to higher-quality animal protein sources — eggs, dairy, fish, or insect protein — rather than as a sole protein source.

The DCM concern. Between 2018 and 2022, the United States Food and Drug Administration (US FDA) investigated reports of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs eating diets with a high proportion of peas, lentils, and other legumes — many of them marketed as grain-free. More than 90 per cent of the diets associated with reported cases were grain-free, and 93 per cent contained peas or lentils. Dogs on these diets showed measurable cardiac changes, and some improved when switched to traditional diets.

However, the US FDA did not establish a causal mechanism and ended routine updates in late 2022, stating the data was insufficient to confirm causation. Research continues — a 2025 narrative review confirmed the statistical association, while an

18-month prospective feeding trial found no clinically significant cardiac changes across grain-free and grain-inclusive groups. The honest assessment: the association is documented, the mechanism is unknown, and the research is ongoing. For senior dogs — especially breeds with age-related cardiac vulnerability — this uncertainty is worth discussing with your vet.

For Senior Cats: Plant Proteins Alone Are Not Enough

Cats are obligate carnivores with non-negotiable requirements for taurine, arachidonic acid, preformed vitamin A, and vitamin B12 — nutrients that are difficult or impossible to source adequately from plants. A senior cat on a plant-only diet faces compounded risk: the age-related decline in protein digestibility meets inadequate protein quality. A 2020 analysis of commercially available vegan pet foods found that the cat food tested fell below recommended levels for taurine and had calcium-to-phosphorus ratio imbalances.

The Always Friday position is clear: we respect dietary choices for humans unconditionally. For cats, the biology sets limits that cultural preferences cannot override. Eggs and dairy — for households that include them — significantly improve the nutritional picture, but a meat-based core diet remains the most reliable way to meet a senior cat’s needs.

Hydrolysed Proteins: A Veterinary Tool for Specific Conditions

When food allergies or inflammatory bowel disease have not responded to a novel protein trial, vets often recommend the next step: a hydrolysed protein diet. Pet parents searching for ‘hypoallergenic dog food’ or ‘IBD diet for cats’ usually arrive here. Here is how it works.

Hydrolysed protein diets use enzymes to break protein molecules into fragments so small that the immune system cannot recognise them as allergens. They are the nuclear option for food allergy management — effective, expensive, and not without trade-offs.

For senior pets, the primary relevance is that inflammatory bowel disease prevalence increases with age, particularly in cats. Some breeds (Boxers and German Shepherds in dogs) carry a higher genetic risk. When a vet suspects food-related IBD or severe allergies that have not responded to novel protein trials, a hydrolysed diet is typically the next step.

The trade-offs for senior pets are worth understanding. First, not all pets respond: studies suggest that 20 to 50 per cent of dogs on hydrolysed diets still experience symptom flare-ups. Second, many hydrolysed formulations are lower in total protein than ideal for seniors who are actively losing muscle mass — the immune benefit may come at the cost of sarcopenia management. Third, palatability is a documented problem: some dogs and many cats refuse the food. And fourth, most hydrolysed diets use soy as the base protein, which is itself a potential allergen and a lower-quality protein source.

Hydrolysed diets are prescription products that require veterinary guidance. They are a tool, not a lifestyle choice — and the decision to use one should be made in partnership with your vet, who can balance the immune management benefit against the protein and palatability concerns.

Protein for Kidney Patients: Quality Over Quantity

If your vet has said the words ‘kidney disease,’ the protein conversation changes immediately. The searches that follow are urgent and specific: ‘best food for dogs with kidney disease,’ ‘low phosphorus protein,’ ‘kidney diet for senior cats.’ Here is the principle that guides every recommendation.

When a vet recommends protein restriction — typically from International Renal Interest Society (IRIS) Stage 2 onwards (see The Protein Myth for the full staging framework) — the protein your pet does eat must be the highest quality available: high biological value, low

phosphorus, and highly digestible. The goal is to deliver enough amino acids to slow muscle wasting while producing the least possible waste for compromised kidneys to process.

Egg whites are the standout. They offer the highest biological value of any food with the lowest phosphorus content per gram of usable protein. They are affordable, globally available, and most pets accept them readily. For kidney patients, egg whites are the single most impactful protein choice you can make.

White fish (cod, pollock, and similar lean species) is the second strongest option — high biological value, low phosphorus, and naturally rich in the omega-3 fatty acids that have been shown to slow kidney disease progression. For senior cats with chronic kidney disease, the combination of white fish and egg whites forms a powerful protein foundation.

Novel proteins like venison and rabbit may earn a place in kidney diets when a pet has sensitivities to more common proteins, though their phosphorus content varies and should be verified with your vet. Insect protein’s phosphorus content (0.6 to 1.5 per cent) requires careful monitoring for kidney patients — it is not inherently low-phosphorus.

Lacto-Ovo Vegetarian Options for Pets (Eggs and Dairy)

For families who follow a vegetarian tradition, feeding a pet raises a practical question that goes beyond nutrition: how do you provide what your dog or cat needs without bringing meat into the kitchen? Here is what works.

For households that prefer to minimise meat, eggs and dairy are the highest-quality non-meat protein sources available for pets. Eggs in particular offer the best biological value of any single food. A senior dog in a lacto-ovo vegetarian household can do well with careful formulation — ideally guided by a veterinary nutritionist who can ensure the diet meets all amino acid, vitamin, and mineral requirements.

Plain yoghurt or curd provides both protein and probiotic bacteria that support digestive health — particularly relevant for senior pets whose gut microbiome is shifting. Paneer (fresh unaged cheese) and cottage cheese offer moderate protein with calcium. Neither is suitable as a sole protein source, but both contribute meaningfully to a balanced lacto-ovo diet.

Insect protein, discussed earlier in this article, offers an additional option for vegetarian households seeking a nutritionally complete animal-source protein that some families find more compatible with their values than conventional meat.

For senior cats in vegetarian households, the biological reality remains: cats are obligate carnivores. Eggs and dairy can meaningfully supplement a cat’s diet, but they cannot replace a meat-based core. A senior cat’s declining protein digestibility makes this constraint even more consequential — the margin for nutritional shortfall narrows with age.
