The 2019 AAHA Canine Life Stage Guidelines, the standard used by veterinarians worldwide, define “senior” as the last 25% of a breed’s estimated lifespan. This means the answer is different for every breed, because lifespan is different for every breed. A Great Dane with a life expectancy of 7–9 years enters the senior window around age 5–6. A Chihuahua with a life expectancy of 14–16 years does not reach it until 11–12. A Labrador, one of the most popular large breeds in the world, becomes a senior at around 9. For cats, the framework comes from the International Society of Feline Medicine (ISFM) and International Cat Care, whose six-stage model is used by over 4,100 accredited Cat Friendly Clinics in more than 50 countries. Under this model, cats are Senior from 11 to 14 and Super Senior at 15 and older. The latest AAHA/AAFP (American Association of Feline Practitioners) guidelines use a slightly different five-stage model that places Senior at 10+, reflecting ongoing refinement in how veterinary science categorises feline ageing. Both frameworks agree on the essential point: most cats should receive senior-level care from around age 10–11.
The reason the answer is size-dependent for dogs but not for cats is straightforward: dogs vary in body mass by a factor of nearly 50 (a 1.5 kg Chihuahua to a 75 kg Mastiff), whereas cats are remarkably uniform (typically 3.5–6 kg across breeds). Since body size is the single strongest predictor of lifespan in dogs, it drives almost everything about when ageing begins.
That said, size is not the only factor. Genetics and lineage, coefficient of inbreeding, epigenetic age acceleration, body condition, diet quality, preventive veterinary care, dental health, environmental enrichment, supplements, and even social and living conditions all shape how long your pet lives and how well they age. But not all of these carry equal weight. For dogs, body size sets the baseline that everything else modifies. For cats, where body size is nearly uniform, the strongest predictors are sex, genetic diversity (crossbred versus purebred), and neutering status. The Size Rule: Why Bigger Dogs Die Younger — and Age Faster

A landmark 2013 study by Kraus, Pavard, and Promislow analysed mortality data across 74 breeds spanning nearly two orders of magnitude in body mass. Their finding was stark: large dogs do not simply start ageing earlier. They age more quickly. The proposed mechanism centres on rapid growth during development. Intense cell proliferation increases the probability of cancer initiation, developmental errors, and accumulated oxidative damage. As Kraus, Pavard, and Promislow concluded, large dogs die young mainly because they age at a faster rate — their lives, in effect, unwind in fast motion.
The largest study ever conducted, Montoya et al. 2023, drawing on 13.3 million dogs from over 1,000 veterinary hospitals, confirmed and quantified this. Overall life expectancy at birth: 12.7 years. By size group: Toy and Small breeds averaged approximately 13.4–13.5 years, Medium 13.2, Large 12.5, Giant 10.6.
The Dog Aging Project has quantified this further. Kraus et al. 2023 found that each additional kilogram of body mass lowers predicted lifespan by approximately 26 days. And in 2024, the project’s epigenetic clock study (McCoy et al., profiling DNA methylation at over 3 million sites across 864 companion dogs) proved this operates at the molecular level. The largest breed size category had epigenomes that were, on average, 0.37 years biologically older per chronological year compared to the smallest. Common Companion Breeds

A note about Labradors: with a median lifespan of 12 years, a yellow or black Labrador Retriever is generally considered a senior from around age 9. For a medium-sized dog weighing 15–25 kg, the AAHA “last 25%” rule places the senior threshold at approximately 10–11 years. This means your Indie is likely still in robust middle age at an age when a Labrador of the same weight is already showing signs of slowing down. One important caveat: no formal peer-reviewed longevity study has ever been conducted specifically on Indian Pariah Dogs. The lifespan figures are consistent across community data and veterinary observation, but they have not been validated with the rigour of large-scale epidemiology. This is a gap worth closing: one of the healthiest dog populations on earth deserves the data to prove it.
The Saluki (Arabian Saluki)
One of the oldest known dog breeds, the Saluki has been a companion and coursing hound across the Arabian Peninsula for thousands of years. Teng et al. 2022 (Scientific Reports, the first UK dog life tables) gives the Saluki a life expectancy of approximately 13.3 years. For context, McMillan et al. 2024 found an overall purebred average of 12.7 years and a crossbreed average of 12.0 — meaning the Saluki comfortably outlives both. Yet the Kangal’s estimated lifespan of 11–13 years is remarkable for its size — a Great Dane of comparable weight averages 7–9 years.
This longevity premium is attributed to the same landrace advantage: the breed was shaped by the demands of survival in harsh working conditions, not by show-ring aesthetics. Hip dysplasia is the primary orthopaedic concern. No large-scale epidemiological study exists. Estimated senior threshold: 8.5–9.5 years.
Senior Cats: A Different Clock

Unlike dogs, where size drives everything, cats are remarkably consistent in body mass across breeds (typically 3.5–6 kg). Cat years to human years: the 15-9-4 rule
If you have searched “how old is my cat in human years” or “cat years to human years,” the conversion endorsed by AAHA, AAFP, and International Cat Care uses a simple formula. A cat’s first year equals approximately 15 human years. The second year adds 9 more, bringing a two-year-old cat to roughly 24 in human terms. After that, each cat year equals approximately 4 human years. For any cat aged 2 or older, the formula is:
Human equivalent age = 24 + 4 × (cat age – 2)
A 10-year-old cat, the start of the senior window, is roughly 56 in human terms. A 15-year-old super-senior is approximately 76. A 20-year-old cat, which well-cared landrace and mixed-breed cats can reach, is equivalent to a 96-year-old human.

This conversion traces back to comparative developmental milestone research from the 1950s and was formally adopted in the 2010 AAFP–AAHA Feline Life Stage Guidelines (Vogt et al.). Unlike dogs — where Wang et al. 2020 derived a logarithmic formula from DNA methylation data — no equivalent simple epigenetic formula exists for cats. However, Raj et al. 2021 (GeroScience) built a highly accurate feline methylation clock using 130 cat blood samples, achieving a correlation of 0.97 and a mean absolute error of just 0.83 years. The clock confirms that cats, like dogs, age non-linearly relative to humans: rapidly in the first two years, then more steadily thereafter. The traditional 15-9-4 table aligns well with what the molecular data shows.
The landmark 2024 UK cat life-tables study by Teng et al., drawing on 7,936 confirmed deaths, found an overall feline life expectancy of 11.74 years. Females lived 1.33 years longer than males. Crossbred cats lived 1.27 years longer than purebreds. Neutered cats lived 1.07 years longer than intact. These are among the most impactful numbers in feline medicine, and the clearest answer to the question “how long do cats live?”

Cat Breed Guide

A note about the Indian Billi and the Arabian Mau: these are naturally evolved landrace cat breeds, the feline equivalents of the Indie dog and the Saluki. The Billi is emerging as a recognised breed identity, with the Feline Club of India actively pursuing international recognition. The Arabian Mau gained recognition from the World Cat Federation (WCF) in 2008 as the only formally recognised native cat breed from the Arabian Peninsula. Both lack the formal health surveillance that established breeds receive, but their genetic diversity and natural selection history strongly suggest health advantages consistent with the crossbred longevity data above.
The “Dog Years” Myth, and What Actually Works

The 7:1 rule likely originated in the 1950s from simple arithmetic: average human lifespan was roughly 70 years, average dog lifespan roughly 10, so 70 ÷ 10 = 7. As veterinarian William Fortney of Kansas State University noted, it was probably a marketing tool designed to encourage owners to bring their pets in for check-ups. It was never supported by any study.
In 2020, a team led by Trey Ideker at UC San Diego published a breakthrough in Cell Systems. They sequenced DNA methylation patterns from 104 Labrador Retrievers and 320 humans. They found that the relationship between dog and human ageing follows a logarithmic curve, not a straight line. The formula:
Human equivalent age = 16 × ln(dog age in years) + 31
Under this formula, a one-year-old dog is equivalent to a 31-year-old human (not 7). An eight-week-old puppy maps to a nine-month-old baby (both teething). A 12-year-old dog corresponds to a 70-year-old human. The formula was expanded in 2022 by Horvath et al. to 93 breeds using 742 blood samples, producing a dual-species epigenetic clock with a correlation of 0.97. The practical takeaway: dogs age rapidly in their first two years, then slow to approximately 4–5 human-equivalent years per calendar year thereafter. The 7:1 rule is not close enough to be useful.
Beyond the Number: What to Watch For
My dog is slowing down. Is my dog old? My cat is slowing down — sleeping more than she used to. He is stiff when he gets up. These observable signs matter more than any birthday. Here is what to look for.
No chart or calculator can replace what you see every day. The most reliable indicator of where your pet sits in their ageing journey is not their date of birth — it is how they move, eat, sleep, think, and interact. The following signs are the earliest and most commonly reported markers of ageing in dogs and cats, drawn from the 2023 AAHA Senior Care Guidelines and veterinary clinical experience.
In Dogs
The grey muzzle is what most people notice first, but it is cosmetic, not diagnostic; it can appear as early as age 5 and says nothing about internal health. The signs that actually matter include: decreased enthusiasm for walks or play (not laziness, often early joint pain); stiffness after rest, especially in the morning or after a nap; visible narrowing of the hindquarters as muscle mass declines (sarcopenia); cloudy eyes (usually nuclear sclerosis, a benign age-related lens change, not cataracts); slower recovery after exercise; difficulty with stairs, furniture, or getting into the car; lumps and bumps appearing on the skin; and changes in appetite, water intake, or bathroom habits.
In Cats
Cats hide pain exceptionally well. Arthritis is estimated to affect over 90% of cats older than 10, yet it is massively underdiagnosed because cats rarely limp — they simply jump less, groom less, and choose lower resting spots. The signs to watch for include: decreased grooming (matted, greasy, or dandruffy fur, especially along the back); reluctance to jump onto surfaces they used to reach easily; increased vocalisation, particularly at night; changes in litter box habits; weight loss — if your cat is getting thinner despite eating, see your vet promptly — overgrown claws (a sign of reduced activity and scratching); and sleeping more or becoming more withdrawn.
For both species, the tools that matter most are the body condition score (BCS) and muscle condition score (MCS), assessed by your vet at each visit. The Landrace Advantage: Why Naturally Evolved Breeds Often Live Longer
Are Indie dogs healthier than purebreds? Do mixed-breed pets live longer? The evidence is nuanced, but the direction is clear.
The relationship between genetic diversity and longevity has been quantified by the Dog Aging Project: each additional percentage point of heterozygosity — a measure of genetic diversity — adds approximately 31 days of expected lifespan. Over the full range of genetic diversity observed across breeds, this translates to roughly 1.7 years. Separately, previous UK studies found crossbreeds lived 1.2–1.3 years longer than purebreds, but the largest study to date, McMillan et al. 2024, drawing on over 580,000 dogs, found the reverse: purebreds averaged 12.7 years versus 12.0 for crossbreeds. The likely explanation is not that pedigree genes are protective but that owners of expensive pedigree dogs invest more in veterinary care. The picture is genuinely complicated, and the honest answer is that breed label alone does not predict lifespan.
What is consistent across all studies is that genetic diversity, not the mixed-breed label itself, is the protective factor. Breeds with large effective population sizes and low inbreeding coefficients live longer. This is where landrace breeds like the Indie, the Saluki, and the Kangal carry a structural advantage: they were shaped by survival — not by closed stud books. Their gene pools were never artificially narrowed for coat colour, skull shape, or leg length. The result is fewer hereditary diseases, stronger immune systems, and bodies that age the way evolution intended.
The same principle applies to cats. The 2024 UK cat life-tables study found that crossbred cats lived 1.27 years longer than purebreds. Landrace cats like the Indian Billi and the Arabian Mau, maintained by natural selection in genetically open populations, are expected to carry similar or greater advantages, though formal epidemiological data is still needed.
When to Start Senior Screening

The 2023 AAHA Senior Care Guidelines recommend wellness examinations every 6–12 months for all senior pets, with bloodwork and urinalysis at every visit. For dogs, “senior” starts at the breed-appropriate threshold from the table above. For cats, screening should begin by age 10–11, with breeds predisposed to kidney disease (Persians, Abyssinians) or cardiac disease (British Shorthairs, Maine Coons) starting earlier. At 15+, when cats enter the super-senior stage, veterinary visits should increase to every 4–6 months.
The minimum senior panel includes: complete blood count (CBC), biochemistry panel (liver, kidneys, glucose, electrolytes), urinalysis with urine specific gravity, and thyroid function. Blood pressure measurement and SDMA — a newer kidney marker that detects disease months earlier than creatinine — should be included where available.
