Pet parents sometimes arrive here proud: “She’s finally drinking loads.” Here’s why that sentence needs a second look.
If that is not your cat, carry on. Everything below is for the far more common problem: a healthy cat who simply does not drink enough.
Why “Just Put Out More Water” Fails
Pet parents often say: “There’s always a full bowl down.” Here’s why that isn’t the same as water going in.
Cats inherited a famously weak thirst drive from desert ancestors, and the full story of that inheritance lives in our hub article rather than here. The practical consequence is worth one paragraph, though, because it explains the whole playbook: a cat’s tongue takes in only around 0.14 millilitres per lap. Even a committed drinking session moves a few teaspoons. A cat physically cannot lap her way out of a dry diet — the arithmetic does not work. Which is why the strongest lever in this guide is not about the bowl at all.
How Much Water Should a Cat Drink a Day?
Pet parents often search exactly that: “how much water should a cat drink a day?” Here’s the number, and the distinction that matters more.
Total need is roughly 44 to 66 millilitres per kilogram of body weight a day: for a four-kilogram cat, somewhere around 175 to 260 millilitres. The distinction most advice skips: that figure is total water, counting what arrives inside food. It is not a drinking target.
Wet food is around three-quarters water, so a wet-fed cat may meet nearly all of her need at mealtimes and visit the bowl rarely. That is normal, and it is why “my cat never drinks water” is so often a description of a well-hydrated cat. A dry-fed cat gets around a tenth of her food as water and has to make up the entire difference by drinking, which, as the lapping arithmetic shows, she is poorly built to do.
The Strongest Lever: Put the Water Inside the Food
Pet parents often ask: “wet food vs dry food — does it really matter for hydration?” and “should I add water to cat food?” Here’s the evidence.
This is where the evidence is strongest, and it is not close. Feeding higher-moisture food reliably increases total water intake and produces more dilute urine — the outcome that matters for the urinary tract. A 2026 scoping review spanning five decades of studies found that genuinely dilute urine was reached only when the moisture came with the meal: on wet food, or on dry food supplemented with an enriched drinking liquid. No bowl or fountain strategy matched it. Controlled work has also shown that raising dietary moisture lowers the urinary conditions in which crystals form.
Moving some or all meals to wet food is therefore the first move. Do it gradually over seven to ten days (and if she is on a prescription diet, ask your vet first), mixing a little of the new into the old and shifting the ratio, so the change never announces itself.
Adding water to food is the cheapest intervention in this entire guide and nearly as strong. Start with a teaspoon stirred into wet food, or a splash on dry, and build over a week or two towards a loose, gravy-like consistency. Warm water releases aroma and often improves the reception. If she walks away, you have added too much too fast — step back and climb more slowly.
And the query behind so many stalled attempts, “cat won’t eat wet food”: this is dietary caution, not defiance, and it yields to patience rather than pressure. Offer tiny amounts alongside the familiar food without ceremony; try pâté, shredded and gravy-style textures, because texture preferences are strong; serve at room temperature or slightly warmed, never fridge-cold; and let repeated neutral exposures do the work. Some cats take weeks. The cat is not failing, and neither are you.
Water Stations Cats Actually Use
Pet parents often hunt for “the best water bowl for cats”, and ask where to put it. Here’s what is welfare consensus and what is preference.
Placement is the evidence-backed part. Keep water away from food, and well away from the litter tray — cats are instinctively reluctant to drink beside either. Run several stations in different quiet rooms rather than one super-bowl in the kitchen: more stations means more encounters, and every encounter is an invitation. In a multi-cat home, separate stations also mean nobody has to cross another cat to drink.
Bowl material and shape are preference, not evidence. No controlled study crowns a best water bowl for cats. Some cats favour ceramic, glass or steel over plastic — worth trying, since plastic scratches and holds odours and biofilm. Many favour a wide, shallow bowl kept brimful, so the water sits proud of the rim. Treat all of it as an experiment on a sample size of one.
On “whisker fatigue”: the idea that whisker contact with bowl sides is painful enough to stop cats eating or drinking has no controlled support, and no veterinary body recognises it as a condition. The one study to test it found cats showed a mild preference for a wider dish but ate no differently. Fair translation: some cats prefer a wider bowl. Nothing more needs claiming.
Freshness beats equipment. Change water daily and wash bowls daily with hot water — an invisible slime film builds fast, and cats taste it. Day-old water refused, fresh water accepted is one of the commonest “fussy drinker” patterns there is.
Do Cat Water Fountains Work?
Pet parents often ask it word for word: “do cat water fountains work?” Here’s the honest answer the marketing skips.
Some cats clearly prefer moving water — the tap-drinkers announce themselves. But preference and intake are different claims, and the intake evidence is weak. The
best-designed study, a randomised crossover, found no increase in total water intake with a fountain, and the circulating-water phase actually produced slightly more concentrated urine. An earlier study appeared to show a fountain advantage, but the effect collapsed when a single enthusiastic cat was excluded, a conclusion the author drew personally. A third comparison likewise found no overall difference in consumption between still and flowing water.
So: do cats prefer running water? Some individuals, genuinely. Does a fountain reliably get more water in? Not on current evidence. Buy one as a preference experiment if your cat is a tap enthusiast, keep it scrupulously clean (an unwashed fountain is a biofilm machine with a pump) and judge it by results in the litter tray, not by how often she visits it. It is an accessory to the food change, never a substitute for it.
Flavouring the Water: Broth, Tuna Water and the Milk Question
Pet parents often ask: “can I give my cat broth?” and “can cats drink milk?” One needs a warning, the other a warm correction.
Made safely, a spoonful of plain broth stirred into food, offered beside it, or frozen into cubes for hot days is a genuinely useful moisture vehicle — most cats find meat-flavoured water far more interesting than plain.
Tuna water (the liquid from a tin of tuna in spring water, never brine or oil) is another popular flavouring. Fine occasionally, with three caveats: tuna carries mercury, so keep it an occasional splash rather than a daily habit; tinned liquids can carry salt, so check; and some cats fixate on tuna until ordinary food loses its appeal. A teaspoon diluted into a bowl, once or twice a week, is the sensible ceiling.
And the milk question, answered warmly, because generations of us grew up on the saucer-of-milk image: most adult cats lose the enzyme that digests milk sugar after kittenhood, so milk often causes digestive upset, and diarrhoea moves water out of a cat, the exact opposite of what this guide is for. She may love it; her gut does not. If dairy is a bonding ritual in your home, a lick of lactose-free cat milk as an occasional treat is the kinder version. For hydration, it is water and moisture-rich food that do the work.
Water Additives for Cats: The Honest Read
Pet parents often eye the shelf and ask: “do water additives for cats actually work, or is it marketing?” Here’s the state of the evidence, funding and all.
Nutrient-enriched waters — flavoured, lightly supplemented liquids sold to boost intake — have real studies behind them, and the studies deserve their asterisk stated plainly: the foundational ones were conducted by a manufacturer. With that disclosed, the findings are consistent: cats offered these liquids alongside plain water drank substantially more liquid overall and produced more dilute urine.
A more recent independent study in the cats that matter most (clinically dehydrated ones) found they accepted the liquid readily but showed no measurable improvement in their blood markers during the study window. Fair summary: a legitimate stacking option for a healthy cat with a lazy thirst, not a treatment for a sick one.
Making It Stick: Stack, Don’t Scattergun
Pet parents often try everything at once for three days. Here’s the approach that actually holds.
Change one thing at a time and give it two weeks. Start with the food (the wet move, or added water), because it carries the most weight. Then layer: an extra station or two in better places, the daily-fresh routine, a flavour experiment, a fountain if she has told you she is a moving-water cat. One change at a time also tells you what is working; five at once tells you nothing.
How to Tell It Is Working
Pet parents often wonder: “how would I even know?” Here’s where the answer shows up.
Not at the bowl — at the tray. More water in means more, paler urine out, so the clumps in a clumping litter grow larger or more numerous over a week or two. That is the success signal.
