At a Glance

“Is my cat dehydrated?” is a question you can start answering at home, with the skin-tent test and a gum check. Both are worth knowing, and both are far less reliable in cats than most pet parents assume.

Dehydration below roughly 5% is not detectable at all by physical signs. A meaningfully dehydrated cat can still pass every check you can do at home.

The skin-tent test misleads in both directions: an overweight cat’s skin springs back even when dehydrated, and a thin or older cat’s skin tents even when hydration is fine.

The most useful thing you can track at home is not a pinch test at all. It is body weight, checked on the same scales every week or two — weight loss is the earliest reliable warning of illness in cats.

Dehydration in a cat is almost always a symptom of something else, so warning signs of dehydration in cats — sunken eyes, dry gums, new lethargy — mean a vet visit to find the cause, not simply more water. This guide covers the checks, the signs, and when to see the vet.

The Home Checks, Done Properly

Pet parents often ask: “How do I check if my cat is dehydrated?” Here’s how the two standard checks work.

These are the checks a vet performs in the consulting room, and there is real value in knowing them. Just hold on to one idea as you read: they are better at telling you something is wrong than at telling you everything is fine.

The skin-tent test

Gently lift a fold of skin and let it go. In a well-hydrated cat it drops back almost at once, within a second or so. If it returns slowly, or stays standing up in a little tent, that is reduced skin turgor and it suggests fluid loss.

Where you test matters more than most guides admit. The scruff at the back of the neck is the easiest place to grab, and the worst place to judge, because scruff skin is naturally loose and elastic in every cat. Test over the ribs or between the shoulder blades instead, where the skin sits closer to the body and gives a truer reading.

The gum check

Lift your cat’s upper lip. Healthy gums are pink, smooth and slippery. Run a fingertip lightly along them: if it glides, moisture is normal, and if it drags or feels sticky, that is a tacky membrane and a sign of dehydration. Dry gums point to more significant fluid loss.

You can also check capillary refill. Press gently on a pale patch of gum until it blanches white, release, and count how long the pink takes to return. Under two seconds is normal. Two caveats worth knowing: many cats have naturally black-pigmented patches on their gums, so find an unpigmented area or check the inner cheek; and capillary refill really measures circulation rather than hydration, so it is a companion to the other checks rather than a substitute.

Sunken eyes, and the quieter signs

Eyes that look sunken into the skull are a late sign of significant dehydration, not an early one. The signs that arrive earlier are far less dramatic: a cat who is a little flat, eating less than usual, whose coat has lost its gloss, or who has become constipated because there is less water available to the gut. None of these is proof of anything on its own. Together, and especially if they are new, they are worth paying attention to.

Why the Home Checks Are Not Enough

Pet parents often say: “I did the pinch test and she seemed fine.” Here’s why that is not the reassurance it feels like.

Below about 5%, there is nothing to find

Veterinary fluid-therapy guidance sets out how much fluid loss produces which physical sign. The first line of that scale is the one worth committing to memory: under roughly 5% dehydration, there is no detectable sign at all. Not a slow skin tent, not tacky gums, nothing. Here is the broad shape of it:

The guidance that carries this scale adds its own warning: the relationship between what you can see and how dehydrated an animal actually is varies substantially, so it should be treated as an estimate. That is a careful way of saying these checks are rough instruments even in trained hands.

The test misleads in both directions

Body condition quietly distorts the skin-tent test, and it does so in opposite ways depending on the cat.

An overweight cat gives false calm. Fat under the skin springs it back into place, so a genuinely dehydrated cat can pass the test.

A thin or elderly cat gives false alarm. With less fat beneath the skin, and with the elasticity that age takes away, the skin tents even when hydration is perfectly normal.

Skin disease and some hormonal conditions change skin elasticity too. So the cats in whom you would most like a dependable answer — the old, the thin, the unwell — are precisely the cats in whom this test is least dependable.

And, as far as we can find, it has never been measured in cats

Worth saying plainly, because it is rarely said: we are not aware of any published study that has established how accurate the skin-tent test is in cats — no sensitivity figure, no specificity figure, no measure of how consistently two people examining the same cat would agree. The guidance we all use is careful, experienced clinical opinion carried across from other species and from human medicine.

Where it has been measured in people, the picture is sobering. In children, testing skin elasticity to detect 5% dehydration picked up a little over half of the genuinely dehydrated cases. That is human data and it should not be transplanted onto cats, but it illustrates the principle we should be honest about: a normal result on this kind of check does not mean much, while an abnormal result means quite a lot.

What Is Genuinely Worth Tracking at Home

Pet parents often ask: “So what should I be watching instead?” Here’s where your attention actually pays off.

If the pinch test is a blunt instrument, the answer is not to give up on home observation. It is to watch the things that carry real information.

Body weight — the one that matters most

Weight is the closest thing you have to an objective measurement, and weight loss is the single most reliable early warning of illness in cats. It is also the easiest thing in the world to miss — it happens slowly, and your cat is in front of you every day.

The method is simple: weigh yourself, then weigh yourself holding your cat, and take the difference. Do it on the same scales, roughly the same time of day, once a month for a healthy adult and every week or two for a senior. Write it down, because memory flatters. A loss of more than about 5% in a month is worth a conversation with your vet, and a sudden drop or a refusal to eat is worth a call the same day.

How much your cat drinks

Total daily water need is roughly 50 millilitres per kilogram of body weight, counting the water in food. That last part matters enormously: wet food is around three-quarters water, so a wet-fed cat may barely touch the bowl and be perfectly hydrated, while a dry-fed cat has to make up the whole difference by drinking.

Measure what goes into the bowl and what is left the next day, allowing for evaporation and for other pets sharing it. One day tells you nothing; a fortnight of readings tells you a great deal. What you are looking for is a change — and a sustained rise in thirst deserves a vet visit rather than reassurance, because it is one of the earliest signs of kidney disease, diabetes and an overactive thyroid. Never restrict water to control it: a cat drinking more than usual is usually compensating for something.

The litter tray

Clumping litter turns your cat’s tray into a rough daily record of urine output. You do not need to weigh anything. Simply notice the pattern: how many clumps, and roughly what size. Bigger or more numerous clumps suggest the kidneys are passing more water than they should. Many tiny clumps, especially with straining, point the other way and need urgent attention.

Appetite and demeanour

The least technical and among the most useful. A cat who is eating less, hiding more, grooming less, or simply not quite herself is telling you something — and telling you before any test will. Trust that observation and act on it.

Dehydration Is a Symptom, Not a Diagnosis

Pet parents often think: “She’s dehydrated, so she needs more water.” Here’s why that is only half the answer.

A healthy cat with free access to water does not become dehydrated. When a cat does, there is nearly always something underneath driving it — chronic kidney disease, diabetes, an overactive thyroid, fluid lost through vomiting or diarrhoea, a urinary blockage, or simply the fact that she has stopped eating and drinking because she feels unwell.

Offering more water is kind, and worth doing. But it treats the visible consequence rather than the cause, and the cause is what your vet is there to find. That is the whole logic of the next section.

When to See the Vet

Pet parents often ask: “Is this a wait-and-see or a go-now?” Here’s the honest tiering.

A routine appointment is the right call for the slower changes: a gradual increase in thirst, a coat that has lost condition, weight that has quietly drifted down over weeks, or a cat who has simply become less herself. None of these is an emergency. All of them are worth investigating before they become one.

What Your Vet Can See That You Cannot

Pet parents often wonder: “What will they actually do that I haven’t?” Here’s the honest answer — they can measure what you can only estimate.

This is the real division of labour, and it is worth understanding rather than resenting. Your vet can run a handful of quick tests that turn guesswork into numbers.

Blood concentration. As a cat loses water, the blood becomes more concentrated. Two simple, fast measurements show this and help quantify how much fluid is missing.

Urine concentration. Cats are desert animals and normally produce very concentrated urine. This is the clever part: if a dehydrated cat’s urine is not concentrated, the kidneys have lost their ability to conserve water. What looks like a mild problem is then a kidney signal — and there is no version of that test you can do at home.

Kidney values and electrolytes. Blood tests that show how the kidneys are coping and whether the body’s salts have been disturbed. Some markers rise early enough to catch kidney decline well before a cat looks unwell.

Weight against the record. Your vet has the figure from the last visit, on the same scales, which is why those routine weigh-ins matter more than they seem.

Your vet is not checking your homework here. They are adding the layer of information that home observation structurally cannot provide, and the two together are far better than either alone.

When Heat Raises the Baseline

Pet parents often notice it in summer — “she seems flatter when it’s hot” — and search for “cat panting”. Here’s the physiology behind both.

Cats cope with heat poorly compared with dogs. They have very few sweat glands, mostly confined to the paw pads, so sweating does almost nothing to cool them.

Instead they behave their way through it: seeking cool surfaces, slowing down, grooming so that evaporating saliva carries heat away.

Which makes one sign especially important. A panting cat is not a cat cooling itself the way a dog does. Open-mouthed breathing at rest is a red flag in a cat, and it warrants a same-day call.

Hot days and dry, air-conditioned rooms both pull extra moisture from a cat through breath and skin, so the losses climb even in a cat who never goes outdoors.
