Your cat, curled on the sofa, is a very close relative of a small wildcat that made its living in some of the driest country on Earth. The domestic cat descends from the African wildcat, Felis silvestris lybica, an animal of arid scrub and semi-desert. In that world, standing water was scarce and unreliable, so cats evolved to get the water they needed from what they caught. A mouse is roughly two-thirds water; prey was the water bottle.

That inheritance is still running. Cats have what physiologists call a low thirst drive: their sense of thirst is blunted compared with animals built around drinking. A dog that loses water tends to feel thirsty and drink to catch up. A cat is far more willing to run a mild water deficit without topping up, because ancestrally, drinking was never the main event. Food was.

What “obligate carnivore” has to do with water

You’ll often see cats described as obligate carnivores — animals that must eat meat to survive. Usually that phrase gets used to talk about protein and taurine, but it matters for water too. A cat’s whole physiology is tuned to a diet of prey: high in animal protein, high in moisture. Take the moisture out, feed a dry, shelf-stable diet, and you’ve kept the cat’s appetite for the food while removing the water that was always supposed to come bundled with it. The thirst drive that might have compensated in another species simply isn’t strong enough to make up the difference.

The single most useful fact in this whole guide is a comparison of water content:

  • Fresh prey and wet food: roughly 70–75% water, close to what a cat’s body evolved to expect.
  • Dry kibble: roughly 10% water: convenient and shelf-stable, but a fraction of the moisture.

A cat eating mostly wet food is being hydrated at every meal, almost without trying. A cat eating mostly dry food has to make up a large water gap by drinking, and, as we’ve seen, the drive to do that is weak. Studies of cats on dry versus wet diets consistently show that cats on wet food take in more total water and produce more dilute urine, while cats on dry food, even with water freely available, tend not to fully compensate.

When a cat takes in less water than she ideally would, her kidneys do their job and conserve it — concentrating the urine. You may notice it: darker, stronger-smelling urine, or firm, dense clumps in the litter tray. In the short term this is simply the kidneys being efficient. The concern is the long game. Persistently concentrated urine is the common thread behind several of the most frequent feline problems, from urinary crystals and stones to bladder inflammation, and it asks more of the kidneys, year after year, in an animal already prone to kidney disease in later life.

What Chronic Low-Grade Dehydration Quietly Does

Pet parents often ask: “Why does my cat get crystals?” or “Can dehydration cause kidney problems in cats?” Here’s the honest answer.

It would be overstating things to say low water intake single-handedly causes these conditions — feline urinary and kidney disease is genuinely multi-factorial, involving genetics, sex, diet, stress and more. But dehydration and concentrated urine are a recurring risk factor that threads through the lot, and, unlike a cat’s genes, it’s one you can actually influence. She isn’t being difficult or ungrateful — she’s simply not wired to treat the bowl as her main water source.
